Our Online Privacy Policy (“Online Policy”) applies to the use of websites and other online spaces operated by the United Food and Commercial Workers Canada Union, Local No. 247 (“UFCW Local 247”). See our Personal Information & Privacy Operational Policy (“Operational Privacy Policy”) for more information about our privacy and personal information practices. See our Social Media Participant Use Policy (“Social Media Policy”) for more information about our use of social media.

Scope

This Online Policy describes information we collect via UFCW Local 247-operated websites, electronic communications (email list messages and text messages) and social media, and how we collect, use, and disclose that information.

Personal Information

Personal information is defined as recorded information that is reasonably capable of identifying a particular individual either alone or when combined with information from other available sources. Examples of personal information include details such as individual’s name, birth date, email address, phone number, and IP address.

Collection of Personal Information

Personal information may be collected, used, or disclosed for any of the identified purposes set out in the Operational Policy.

Personal information of individuals accessing UFCW Local 247-operated websites, electronic communication and social media may be collected automatically or directly from the individual.

If collected personal information is needed for any purpose other than those set out in the Operational Policy, UFCW Local 247 will not use or disclose it without obtaining additional consent from the person from whom it was collected.

Policy Changes

UFCW local 247 is committed to Internet privacy as demonstrated by the policies set forth herein. Please recognize that UFCW Local 247 may, in its sole discretion, modify these policies from time to time by updating this posting and our local union’s policies, so we encourage individuals to check this page each time they visit our website.

The continued use of our website following any changes to this Online Policy will constitute each individual’s acceptance of such changes. The date of the latest revision will be listed below so an individual will know if the policies have changes since they last accessed one of our websites.

Information collected automatically

When individuals visit our website, we automatically obtain information about their usage, such as pages visits, information downloaded, device used, and IP address. The purpose of this collection is to analyze non-identifiable web traffic data for the purpose of assessing system performance, website management, and improving the web services we provide.

We do not use this information on any kind of individual basis. We do not collect or store personally identifiable information, such as your name, mailing address, email address, or phone number, unless you provide that information to us during your visit.

Information collected directly from individuals

Personal information may be collected directly from individuals who consent or voluntarily provide information in order to use specific online services. Personal information may be collected and stored in the following circumstances:

  • When an individual requests a response from UFCW Local 247;
  • When an individual provides information for a specific purpose (i.e. completes a union survey, participates in an event, applies for a scholarship or education opportunity, updates or provides contact information to receive updates or information from UFCW Local 247, etc).

Use of Personal Information

The personal information collected from UFCW Local 247-operated websites, electronic communication and social media will only be used by authorized staff to fulfill the purpose for which the information was originally collected, or for a use consistent with that purpose.

UFCW Local 247 will not use an individual’s personal information for another purpose without an individual’s consent. UFCW Local 247 will not disclose an individual’s personal information except as authorized or required by law.

All unsubscribe or opt-out requests will be processed promptly, whether through automatic means or by email request to communications@ufcw247.com.

If an individual believes that their personal information is being used for a purpose other than what was intended, they are encouraged to direct their inquiries to the Privacy Officer at privacy@ufcw247.com.

What safeguards are in place?

UFCW Local 247 is obligated to protect personal information by making reasonable security arrangements against such risks as unauthorized access, collection, use, disclosure or disposal.

UFCW Local 247 integrates security measures into the design, implementation and day-to-day operating practices of UFCW Local 247-operated websites, electronic communications and social media.

As part of UFCW Local 247’s commitment to the protection of personal information, reasonable efforts are made to ensure the secure collection, storage, and transmission of sensitive information using industry-accepted data collection and encryption methods.

Cookies

A cookie is a small file stored on an individual’s computer by their web browser when using some internet sites. Cookies can also store personal information such as a person’s name, e-mail address, home or work address, or telephone number.

Persistent cookies may use this type of personal information to identify a person whenever they access a website. Sessional cookies are used to help a person move around our web site and do not store personal information. Sessional cookies are valid only during the time a person is actually using the website.

UFCW Local 247 uses persistent cookies (which may store personal information) but also uses sessional cookies (which do not store personal information).

Access and correction of information submitted online

Please contact our privacy officer at privacy@ufcw247.com to obtain access to, or make a correction to, information you have submitted via UFCW Local 247-operated websites, electronic communication and social media.

It is important to note that we periodically receive routine updates to our database records from employers pursuant to the terms of collective agreements. If you are a UFCW Local 247 member and have requested personal information changes, please also alert your employer of any change. Failure to do so may result in your requested changes being overwritten by a subsequent routine update from your employer.

Social Media

UFCW Local 247 social media accounts are managed by union staff and are subject to our Social Media Policy.

Through social media, UFCW Local 247 provides information about union activities, as well as recent developments on issues of concern and interest to our membership. Our social media content includes:

  • news releases, media stories, speeches, statements, notices and other publications issued by UFCW Local 247 and its allies and affiliated organizations;
  • links to information and articles about issues of concern and interest to our membership in B.C. and other jurisdictions; and
  • event information and photographs.

Text Messages

UFCW Local 247 may, from time to time, provide an opportunity for users to sign up on our website and “Opt In” to receive SMS text messages from our union. An individual can cancel the SMS service at any time. Just text “STOP” to the short code. After sending the SMS message “STOP” to us, we will reply with an SMS message to confirm that the person has been unsubscribed. After this, they will no longer receive SMS messages from us. If an individual wants to join again, just sign up again and we will start sending SMS messages to again.

If an individual is experiencing issues with the messaging program they can reply with the keyword HELP for more assistance. Carriers are not liable for delayed or undelivered messages. As always, message and data rates may apply for any messages sent to an individual from us and to us from an individual. Message frequency can vary.

We never share or sell the mobile numbers we collect.

Emails

People who subscribe to email lists messages via the website or by completing a hard copy form provided by us will receive periodic updates from UFCW Local 247 by email.

An individual may opt out of receiving future information via email by using the unsubscribe procedure specified in the email messages received.

Please note that, once an individual has opted out of receiving emails from us, we will no longer be able to add that person back to our email lists, and they will stop receiving email updates from us via our email lists. An individual may still receive one-to-one email communication from us.

If a person has unsubscribed, they may take steps to add themselves back to our email list service. For further information or technical assistance, please contact communications@ufcw247.com.

Telephone Townhalls

Current and active UFCW Local 247 members who have provided us with their phone numbers will be invited to participate in union meetings that follow a telephone townhall format. These union meetings will cover a topic relevant to those we are calling, such as a collective bargaining update affecting an individual’s workplace or our Quarterly General Membership Meetings.

Current and active UFCW Local 247 members may receive an automated call or voicemail message in advance of the Telephone Townhall Meeting followed by a call inviting them to join the meeting at the time that it is taking place.

Financial Information and Payments

UFCW Local 247 does not sell items or services, nor do we seek donations of money through our websites.

Links to Other Websites

Visitors to UFCW Local 247-operated websites should be aware that our websites may contain links to other sites, including those of service and benefits providers and other third parties.

When you link to another site, UFCW Local 247’s Online Policy and Operational Privacy Policy will not apply.

UFCW Local 247 is not responsible for the privacy practices or content on such sites. We encourage our users to be aware when they leave our website and to read the privacy policies of each website that they visit that collects personally identifiable information.
