UFCW Local Unions in Ontario win arbitration in recognition of National Day for Truth and Reconciliation

Toronto – November 9, 2021 – UFCW Canada Local Unions in Ontario recently won a historic arbitration after taking Loblaw to task for violating the terms of its collective agreement upon failing to recognize the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation as a paid holiday.

UFCW Canada local unions in Ontario represent tens of thousands of members at Loblaw banners across the province and can be satisfied with the outcome of this decision which will see members compensated for retroactive holiday pay this past September 30.

The National Day for Truth and Reconciliation came into effect this year as part of the federal government’s commitment to advancing reconciliation with Indigenous peoples and providing an opportunity to reflect on the shameful legacy of Canada’s residential school system towards national healing.

The outcome of this decision will allow UFCW Canada members across Loblaw banners in Ontario to take part in this healing and to be compensated accordingly in the spirit of their collective agreement.
