Ottawa – October 11, 2023 – The UFCW Canada Indigenous Sub-Committee recently gathered in Ottawa to participate in the Canadian Labour Congress’ (CLC) Indigenous Lobby Day.

Over 80 activists from CLC affiliated unions met with Members of Parliament and Senators to advocate on issues facing Indigenous communities including ending boil water advisories on reserves, the establishment of a Red Dress emergency system that will notify the public when an Indigenous women, girl or two-spirit person goes missing, and the implementation of all the recommendations from the Truth and Reconciliation Commission, including honouring victims of residential school.  

Afterward, the UFCW Canada Indigenous Sub-Committee visited the Native Women’s Association of Canada headquarters in Ottawa and met with CEO Lynne Groulx to share perspectives of Indigenous workers from across the country. The group also took part in a Reconciliation Walking Tour led by the Assembly of 7 Generations in collaboration with UFCW national partner, The First Nations Child and Family Caring Society.

The members of the UFCW Canada Indigenous Sub-Committee meet regularly throughout the year to advance UFCW’s support for Indigenous members and strengthen Indigenous-focused education and awareness throughout the union.
