UFCW Canada Statement on the 2025 Federal Election

Toronto – April 29, 2025 – The recent Canadian federal election marks a pivotal moment for working families across the country. UFCW Canada congratulates all those elected who have committed to fighting for everyday Canadians, especially those who stand with us in advocating for fair wages, workers’ rights and stronger communities.

At the same time, we are saddened to see the departure of some Members of Parliament who have stood shoulder to shoulder with UFCW Canada from the very beginning. These leaders have been strong allies in the fight for fairness, and their voices will be deeply missed in the House of Commons. We thank them for their unwavering dedication to working people.

UFCW Canada looks forward to working with the new government on issues that matter deeply to workers and their families. This includes urgent action on affordable housing, the rising cost of living, stronger universal healthcare, good jobs, affordable childcare, and trade policies that put workers first.

We are grateful for the leadership of Jagmeet Singh, and we are saddened to see him step down as leader of the New Democratic Party. Throughout his tenure, Jagmeet was a tireless champion for working people and steadfast ally of UFCW Canada and the labour movement. His leadership delivered real, tangible progress – from securing federal anti-scab legislation to advancing a national school nutrition program, dental care, and pharmacare. He never wavered in his commitment to good jobs and strong communities, and his voice has been a vital force for fairness and justice in Parliament. His legacy will continue to inspire our work moving forward.

Finally, we extend a heartfelt thank you to the countless UFCW Canada members who volunteered their time and cast their votes in this election. Democracy depends on participation, and your dedication to building a better future for all working families makes us proud.

Together, we will keep advocating and building a Canada that works for everyone.
