Toronto – January 30, 2026 – Canada’s leading private sector union, the United Food and Commercial Workers (UFCW Canada), announced today that its National Council has voted to endorse Rob Ashton in the New Democratic Party of Canada’s leadership race.
The decision follows thoughtful discussion and consideration of a strong and diverse group of candidates seeking to lead the party, including Tanille Johnston, Avi Lewis, Tony McQuail, and Heather McPherson. UFCW Canada recognizes and respects the contributions, ideas, and commitment that each candidate has brought to the leadership contest and to the broader movement for social and economic justice in Canada.
“In a race with many capable and dedicated candidates, the National Council’s endorsement of Rob Ashton reflects his deep roots in the labour movement and his long-standing commitment to advancing the rights of working people,” said UFCW Canada National President Barry Sawyer. “Rob understands firsthand the challenges facing workers and unions today, and he brings that experience into his vision for the future of the NDP.”
A lifelong worker and union leader, Rob Ashton currently serves as the president of the International Longshore and Warehouse Union Canada (ILWU Canada) and has spent his career organizing alongside workers, advocating for fair wages and safe workplaces, and standing in solidarity with unions and community allies.
“Rob’s connection to the labour movement and his respect for collective action align closely with UFCW Canada’s mission to build a fairer economy for all. While we respect the strength of every candidate in this race, we believe Rob brings an important perspective that deserves strong support.”
