Toronto – August 6, 2021 – Cannabis dispensary workers from Tokyo Smoke at the Chartwell Shopping Center in Toronto become the retailers third location to join UFCW 1006A after securing a successful certification vote.
“I am proud to congratulate our newest members for standing up for themselves and their co-workers to improve their workplace,” says UFCW 1006A President Wayne Hanley. “It is exciting to see more and more cannabis workers choose our local union to achieve fairness, respect and dignity at work.”
UFCW 1006A is quickly becoming the top choice for cannabis workers across the province. The local union is already home to Tokyo Smoke workers at two other GTHA locations and one Superette location in Ottawa.
“I am really proud of what we accomplished – the solidarity was truly moving,” says Olivia Lu, Tokyo Smoke worker. “This is a new industry and the fact that people are already stepping up and saying I want to make a difference not just for me, but for my co-workers as well – it’s great to see.”
UFCW Local 1006A represents 36,000 members in a wide range of sectors across Ontario, including the grocery retail, food processing, hospitality, cannabis, laundry, warehousing, transportation, and eye care industries.
