Build safer workplaces
Health and safety is one of the most important responsibilities in any unionized workplace. Committee members play a critical role in identifying hazards, preventing injuries, participating in inspections and investigations, and ensuring workers have a voice in creating safer working conditions.
Members looking to build their health and safety knowledge can begin with webCampus On-the-Go modules, including The Basics of WHMIS – GHS, PPE: The Last Line of Defence, Basic Health & Safety Rights, Mental Health Check-in, and Dealing with Customer Abuse. These short courses take 15 minutes or less to complete and feature practical learning with no tests or exams.
Members can continue building their expertise through courses such as Making the Most of Your Workplace Inspections, Making the Most of JHSC Meetings, and Injured at Work: Know Your Options. Those looking to expand their knowledge even further can earn the Injury Prevention Specialist and Safe Work Foundations micro-credentials or complete the Occupational Health and Safety Specialist certificate program.
Build stronger representation
Union Stewards are often the first point of contact when members have workplace questions or concerns. From interpreting collective agreements and representing co-workers to helping resolve workplace issues, Stewards play an essential role in building stronger unions and more respectful workplaces.
To help members prepare for these responsibilities, webCampus offers a variety of learning opportunities beginning with On-the-Go modules, including Stewards – Workplace Activists, Effective Responses to Unreasonable Managers, Be Assertive – Not Aggressive, and Solving Problems.
Stewards can continue developing their skills through practical courses such as Steward Essentials, The Basics of Bargaining, and Everyday Leadership. More in-depth learning opportunities include Advanced Stewarding, Fear and Intimidation in the Workplace, Investigations, and Human Rights and Diversity.
