UFCW Local 247 Social Media Participant Use Policy

UFCW Local 247 uses social media as one of several communications tools to keep members up-to-date and informed about their union, workplaces, and communities. While it is no replacement for one-on-one direct communication, social media can help us reach members quickly and effectively.

We welcome respectful comments and questions on UFCW Local 247’s social media channels, and we expect all participants in those channels to use the same civil and on-topic approach they would when speaking in person with a union staff person or fellow member.

By participating in and engaging with UFCW Local 247’s social media channels, you agree to the following terms and conditions of our Social Media Participant Use Policy, which is subject to amendment or modification at any time.

Advancing Solidarity and Respect

We know certain aspects of social media can have negative consequences for members of our union, community, and staff. At the same time, social media is where many of our members communicate and find the information they need.

As trade unionists, we aspire to create online spaces for participants that are:

  • Positive, inclusive, and informative,
  • Guided by the principles of solidarity, unity, and social justice, and
  • Where everyone is treated with dignity and respect, following the principle of treating others the way we would like to be treated.

Cause for Comment Deletion

In advancing solidarity and respect on our social media channels, UFCW Local 247 reserves the right to delete the following types of comments:

  • Comments that contain violent, inflammatory, obscene, profane, hateful, or racist remarks, links, or images
  • Comments that threaten or defame any person or organization
  • Comments that constitute harassment, bullying (including cyber-bullying), or abuse
  • Comments that are unrelated to the topic of the post
  • Comments that contain inaccurate or misleading information about UFCW Local 247, the interpretation of a collective agreement, members’ terms and conditions of employment, the interpretation of legislation, or staff and Executive Board members
  • Comments that contain misinformation or perpetuate conspiracies
  • Comments that may create a risk for a member in their employment, such as sharing confidential employment-related information
  • Comments that are solicitations, advertisements, or endorsements of any third-party organizations, unless they are endorsed by UFCW Local 247
  • Comments promoting or opposing any person campaigning for election to a position in UFCW or UFCW Local 247
  • Comments that suggest or encourage illegal activity or contain material that violates copyrights or trademarks of others
  • Repetitive or duplicate comments by a single user, or repetitive comments by others regarding a matter that UFCW Local 247 has already addressed.

Participants engaging on UFCW Local 247’s social media accounts are individually responsible for the content of their comments. In certain circumstances, UFCW Local 247 may report comments to the relevant platforms and/or the authorities.

Blocking Accounts

If repeated posts of the above nature are made by any individual account, we retain the right to block that person from our channels without warning. Further, UFCW Local 247 reserves the right to restrict comments on any post in order to protect its members, staff and leadership from harassment, or when the discussion is no longer respectful or productive.
