UFCW 247 Women’s Committee makes a difference in the lives of women

The UFCW 247 Women’s Committee takes on activities that make a difference in the day-to-day lives of women, and UFCW 247 members are invited to join and participate in some rewarding work.

The Women’s Committee does work in the community that involves much more than simply helping out women in the union.

For this Christmas season, the Women’s Committee provided a gift to each of 61 women and 63 children fleeing abusive situations in Women’s Shelter programs.

Normally, the Women’s Committee has a fun day of on-site Christmas baking for all the women and their children, but this year, due to the Covid-19 pandemic, the women and children will receive gift cards, presents, and ginger bread houses for them to build and decorate.

The Women’s Committee also recently gathered into two small groups to organize and assemble Emergency care kits. The kits were distributed to programs that assist those that are homeless or in other dire situations that could be in need of these kits.

Among the Committee’s efforts:

  • we prepare emergency kits to provide basic necessities to help those in trouble for 72 hours;
  • coordinate the annual Shoe Memorial each December;
  • BBQs;
  • baking events;
  • International Women’s Day events;
  • donations to Women’s Shelters;
  • donations to homeless shelters, and much more…

Women’s rights are an important issue for the union, and having an active Women’s Committee whose goal is to help people makes a positive difference in peoples lives, often at a time when they most need it.

Any members interested in participating in the UFCW 247 Women’s Committee can contact Tima Dickerson at the union office, or email tdickerson@ufcw247.com

Current members of the Women's Committee include Cathy Maw, Kathleen Allen, Sandra Peters, Dawn Stevenson, Cathy Shannon, Sharon Tuerlings, Marg Robins, and Tima Dickerson (chair).
