Shoe Memorial 2026 Collection Begins

December 6 is the National Day of Remembrance and Action on Violence Against Women, where we remember the lives of 14 young women who were killed in a mass shooting at l’École Polytechnique de Montréal in 1989. It is also a day of action, and for some time, UFCW Local 247 has led actions to bring attention to gender-based violence.

Over many years, UFCW Local 247 activists have collected new and lightly used shoes from across the Lower Mainland to display at a public place every December 6, honouring the memory of women murdered in British Columbia. These shoes are then donated to shelters to assist women in need.

We are very proud of our local’s participation in this initiative. It is a truly powerful event.

Keep an eye out for Shoe Memorial collection boxes in your workplace, where we’ll be collecting as many pairs of shoes as we can from September 22 to November 14, 2025.

Please note that we are focusing our efforts on the Lower Mainland to ensure we can economically collect and transport shoes to the site of the activity.

To donate shoes, or to arrange for pick up, please contact our Surrey Office at 604.535.8329 or ufcw@ufcw247.com.
