Final Arguments Made in Hearing Over FreshCo Collective Agreement

UFCW 247 and Company representatives had their opportunity to make final arguments today over the outstanding issues concerning a collective agreement to cover Local 247 members at the new FreshCo banner. The Company has announced plans to convert multiple Safeway Stores in the province to their discount banner. As part of the earlier negotiations process undertaken by Local 1518 and Sobeys, Special Officer Vince Ready awarded a first contract for 1518 FreshCo members. We began negotiations with the Company in April and although some language changes were made, the Company maintained a position that the Wages and benefits awarded by Mr. Ready would be their final position.

We believed there was a failure in the award to address future wage increases, as well as having scales topping out at wages less than comparable agreements. Arbitrator David McPhillips heard argument from both parties after receiving initial written submissions on June 14th and replies on June 28.

We hope to have a decision as soon as possible as members in these locations are currently working under the agreed upon language, and the Vince Ready awarded scales.
