December 6 is the National Day of Remembrance and Action on Violence Against Women, where we remember the lives of 14 young women who were killed in a mass shooting at l’École Polytechnique de Montréal in 1989. It is also a day of action, and for some time, UFCW Local 247 has led actions to bring attention to gender-based violence.
Over many years, UFCW Local 247 activists have collected new and lightly used shoes from across the Lower Mainland to display at a public place every December 6, honouring the memory of women murdered in British Columbia. These shoes are then donated to shelters to assist women in need.
Our shoe collection efforts have now closed, and we are now preparing to host this powerful and moving event.
