Lapu-Lapu Day Events

UFCW Local 247 is horrified to learn of the events in Vancouver on April 26, 2025, where someone drove a vehicle into a crowd attending the Lapu-Lapu Festival. The person killed and injured a number of people.

This act was a truly horrific end to what had been a joyous festival hosted by the Filipino community in Vancouver. It has left an indelible impact on us all. We offer our most sincere condolences and solidarity to all those affected by these events.

“As a union with many Filipino members, we feel this grief within our community and express our most profound solidarity,” said UFCW Local 247 President Dan Goodman. “Let us rally around the Filipino community across BC and put into action the true meaning of solidarity – that an injury to one is an injury to all.”

We will continue to monitor this situation and provide further statements and support as the needs of the Filipino community are expressed.

Action

In these moments, it’s not always clear what a person can do. With humility, we suggest the following:

  • Stay close to each other. News of this event is global, and this can have wide-ranging impacts, even on those who weren’t there. Notice if someone needs some support.
  • Find and share resources. There is also a constantly updated listing of phone numbers and services available here. These are local community supports as well as government and other social services.
Members of the Filipino community have quickly organized a site with resources for those affected, including phone numbers and key information, which we amplify here: https://vanfilemergency.my.canva.site/.
  • Give blood. If able, please consider donating blood this week: https://www.blood.ca/en
