UFCW Celebrates National Bannock Day

On July 31, UFCW Canada celebrates National Bannock Day by honouring the rich history of bannock and the Indigenous communities who continue to share, preserve, and reinvent this important food tradition.

Whether baked, fried, or cooked over an open fire, bannock is a simple yet versatile recipe that can be enjoyed in countless ways. With a few quality ingredients made by UFCW Canada members, you can create your own version of this iconic bread at home.

Start with the foundation of any great bannock recipe: flour. For a light, tender texture, reach for Robin Hood Flour or Rogers Foods Flour, proudly produced with the skill and care of UFCW members. Add Burnbrae Farms Eggs for richness and structure, and mix in Lactantia Butter to create a bannock that is golden, flavourful, and perfect for sharing.

For a traditional sweet bannock, drizzle your warm loaf with LB Maple Syrup for a taste of Canada’s favourite natural sweetener. You can also add ingredients like berries, cinnamon, or a touch of sugar to create your own unique variation.

Looking for a savoury option? Bannock is the perfect accompaniment to soups, stews, and family meals. It can also be transformed into modern creations like bannock tacos, breakfast sandwiches, burger buns, or even waffles. These creative interpretations celebrate the versatility of bannock while continuing to honour its connection to Indigenous foodways and community.

No matter how it’s prepared, bannock remains a food rooted in sharing. Today, Indigenous chefs, home cooks, and communities are continuing to celebrate bannock’s history while introducing new flavours and cooking methods that help carry this tradition forward for future generations.

Choosing UFCW-made products isn’t just about quality and taste—it’s about supporting the unionized Canadian workers behind the food we enjoy every day. These workers help produce ingredients that reach families across the country while building stronger workplaces and communities.

This National Bannock Day, gather with friends and family, celebrate Indigenous traditions, and enjoy bannock made with ingredients proudly produced by UFCW members.
