Grimm's Members Ratify by 92%

UFCW 247 members employed at Grimm's Fine Foods have overwhelmingly ratified an extension to their collective agreement by 92% at a meeting held Sunday June 5th. The extension was proposed by the Company in connection to their announcement that they would not be able to renew the lease on their current location and were looking at building a new facility. The question was would any new facility be in the lower mainland or would the work be sent to other Company plants in Saskatchewan? The Company approached the members with proposals including a seven year extension. While many of the original proposals would have seen significant concessions for existing employees, two weeks of negotiations resulted in an agreement that only contains minor changes for current employees with lump sums and wage increases over the next seven years. "It was a difficult situation for our committee," commented Local 247 Secretary Treasurer Dan Goodman who chaired the Unions team. "They had to balance the proposals of the Company against ensuring the facility remain here in B.C., keeping 170 fellow members employed. I thought they did an excellent job and should be commended".

Grimm's Members to Vote on Deal

UFCW 247 members employed at Grimm's Fine Foods are set to vote on an extension to their collective agreement. Last year the Company informed the Union that they would not be able to extend the lease on the current property and would be exploring all options. Recently Company officials sat down with the Executive of the Local and told them that they would like to maintain a facility in Vancouver, had options to do so, but need to extend the current agreement in order to have cost certainty before committing to invest in the renovations needed to upgrade the site they were all looking at. The Union got the shop stewards together and met with the Company for almost two weeks in order to meet the deadling the Company had on purchasing the proposed property. A vote will be held this sunday at the Sheraton Guilford at 10 a.m. to let the members have their say on the recently reached memorandum.

Swiss Water Members Ratify New Deal

Members at Swiss Water Decaffeinated voted and ratified the new Memorandum of Agreement by 82.4% at a meeting held April 26th.

Improvements were made to the Sick Leave, Bereavement (formerly Compassionate) Leave, and Optical coverage provisions.

There were significant changes made to the Process Operator 2 and Lab Technologist scale and members will receive increase to the wage scales of 7.5% over the 4 year agreement.

Swiss Water Members Unanimously Vote Strike

Swiss Water members have sent  a clear message to the Company by voting 100% in favour of strike action at a meeting held tuesday evening. Negotiations were recently held with the assistance of mediator Grant McArthur but the company's monetary offer fell short of what the Union negotiating committee felt would be acceptable to the membership. We will be contacting the Company to see if they wish to return to the table.

Strike Votes Set for Swiss Water

The Strike Vote for Swiss Water members has been set for Thursday February 3rd, from 5pm to 8pm at the UFCW 247 Training Centre, 544 Columbia Street, New Westminster. We urge all members to come out and show support for your negotiating committee.

No Deal for Swiss Water Members

Even with the assistance of Mediator Grant McArthur, mediation held on January 24th failed to produce a settlement for UFCW 247 members employed at Swiss Water. "We were close", remarked Secretary Treasurer Dan Goodman,"but ultimately the Company's last offer fell short of where our committee felt we needed to be in order to recommend settlement."

The Local will be going back to the members to ask them for a show of support by way of a strong strike vote with hopes of reaching a deal before that becomes necessary. Details of the vote will be posted when finalized.

Back to the Bargaining Table for Loblaws Members

The Company contacted us and after a brief discussion we have agreed to resume negotiations on November 24th and 25th. The Company expressed an interest in getting back together after viewing the strike notices going up in all its locations. We have told them that we are willing to meet but that the strike votes will be going ahead as scheduled unless we are able to reach an agreement. Please check the website during those two days for updates.

We are also attempting to schedule additional strike vote metings in order to provide additional opportunities for people to vote.
