Sobeys Serves Notice to Re-Open Safeway Collective Agreement day after Arbitration on JLM Process

On October 5, Arbitrator John McConchie heard argument from UFCW 247 and Sobeys West counsel on the issue of the Company placing 19 Safeway stores in the Joint Union/Management Review process. It was a one day hearing that mostly consisted of both parties arguing the intent and application of the language in LOU #4 of the Safeway Collective Agreement. The Unions felt that the Company is attempting to basically renegotiate the Collective agreement through the JLM process by submitting such a large number of stores.

Ironically, we have now received notice from Sobeys to commence re-opening negotiations of the Safeway Collective agreement. Either party could have served notice as of September 30 and it was expected the Company would do just that. We will now be looking to make arrangements for members to provide input through proposal surveys and hold a proposal conference. We will update members as the plans progress.
