Superstore strike averted in Saskatchewan but not in Alberta

ROUND-THE-CLOCK BARGAINING SESSION RESULTS IN TENTATIVE AGREEMENT BETWEEN UFCW CANADA LOCAL 1400 AND LOBLAW COMPANIES LIMITED (LCL). IN ALBERTA LCL STRIKES STILL SET TO COMMENCE MONDAY.

SASKATOON, October 3, 2008 – A Saskatchewan-wide strike at Real Canadian Superstore, Warehouse Club, and Extra Foods has been averted by a tentative agreement reached early today in Saskatoon.

A strike had been scheduled to begin Saturday morning if an agreement had not been worked out by midnight last night. That deadline came and went as round-the clock bargaining produced a tentative agreement reached early this morning between UFCW Canada Local 1400 and Loblaw Companies Limited (LCL).

Membership meetings across Saskatchewan are now being scheduled to outline the terms of the settlement, and to conduct ratification votes. The union will be recommending acceptance of the settlement to the membership.

A ratification vote in Manitoba is also pending on a separate LCL contract there. UFCW Canada Local 832 and LCL reached a tentative settlement in Winnipeg last week covering RCSS and Extra Foods locations in that province.

Meanwhile, in Alberta preparations continue for strikes to begin early next week at Real Canadian Superstore locations in Edmonton and Calgary. Earlier this week talks broke off between UFCW Canada Local 401 and the company.  Strikes at Superstore locations in Edmonton are scheduled to start on Monday, October 6, and in Calgary on October 7.
