Local 1518 Terrace Shoppers Members Vote for Strike Action

After 4 days of mediation, negotiations between the Union Negotiating Committee and Shoppers Drug Mart in Terrace have made virtually no progress in reaching an agreement for a first contract.

As a result, the Union Negotiating Committee decided that a strike mandate was necessary to send a message at the bargaining table that negotiations have to get moving. On September 11, Shoppers members in Terrace voted 84% in favour of strike action.

The employer continues to want to force a contact on members that is inferior to the contracts that were negotiated for Shoppers members at ten other unionized stores.

"The treatment of these members as second class citizens is completely unacceptable," says UFCW 1518 President Ivan Limpright. "It's great to see the members participating in a strike vote, and providing a strong mandate to their Negotiating Committee. Hopefully we'll see the company start to make some moves in the right direction, so that an agreement can be reached that is in the best interest of these members."

Mediation is set to resume in October.
