Extra Foods/ Westfair Locks Out/ Layoff Prince George members

UFCW Local 247 members working in the Prince George Extra Foods were informed they would be laid off effective close of business August 18, 2006. The Westfair controlled Extra Foods Store in Prince George also informed Local 1518 that it was serving lockout notice on the Union after the 1518 members overwhelmingly rejected the "final offer" presented by the company.
Immediately after the vote Local 1518 had sent the employer a letter asking to return to the bargaining table in an attempt to negotiate a fair collective agreement. Westfair/Extra Foods responded to that request with the lock out notice and advised both Local 247 and 1518 that it was cutting off health care insurance to its employees at the same time.

In related news after almost seven months of strike the dispute with Extra Foods/ Westfair at Park Royal in West Vancouver will go to mediation on August 18th.

Mediator Vince Ready has agreed to meet with the company and UFCW Local 1518 in an attempt to work out an agreement that would end the lengthy dispute.
Local 247 members have supported their 1518 brothers and sisters and have honoured the picket line.
