Sobeys weekly pay grievance: Arbitrator Ready rules in favour of bi-weekly pay, with conditions

The Union has just received the award from Arbitrator Ready about Safeway’s intent to move to a bi-weekly payroll.The matter had been heard last friday and Arbitrator Ready told the parties he would issue a decision as quickly as possible.

In his award, Arbitrator Ready has found Safeway’s decision to go to a bi-weekly payroll violates the collective agreement. But, unfortunately, he has exercised his authority to amend the collective agreement to allow for the bi-weekly payroll.

Over Safeway’s opposition, he has ordered conditions that will minimize the impact on our members, including a one-time bridging loan for members and a vacation bank for part-time employees.

A full copy of the award will be posted on the wesite once we have had the chance to review it with our legal council.
