Park Royal Extra Foods Update

The strike at the Extra Foods store at Park Royal Mall in West Vancouver hit the six-month mark today (July 13). The strike began January 13 after Westfair, the company that controls Extra Foods, insisted on concessions during negotiations for a new collective agreement with the 100 members of UFCW Local 1518 employed there. Local 247 members have supported their 1518 brothers and sisters and have honoured the picket line.

The company attempted to operate the store on a scaled down schedule but the effect of the solid picket line on the business forced them to shut the doors on June 9th. There have been some recent discussions between Local 1518 and the Company, also involving Wayne Hanley-the UFCW National Director, but to date no progress has been made. The dispute has also delayed bargaining for Local 247 members at 8 other Extra Foods locations in the province.

"I think it was extremely important for us to show the Company that we are behind the 1518 members 100%," commented Local 247 President Gib Whitlock. "This dispute has the potential to effect bargaining with this Company across the country."
