 Canada Safeway Members Ratify New Agreement by 75%

UFCW 247 members employed at Canada Safeway stores in British Columbia have ratified a new collective agreement with the Company. Members voted 75% in favour of the new deal at meetings held across the province over the last five days. 'It certainly created a unique dynamic with the sale of the company being announced right in the middle of voting,' commented Local 247 President Suzanne Hodge.

It was announced Wednesday in the media that Empire Co. (Sobeys) had acquired the Canadian assets of Safeway for $5.8 billion.

Later that day the Company released a letter to all Safeway Employees, and the President's of all the Local Unions who represent Safeway employees, writing “The employment of all union employees of Canada Safeway will continue with Sobeys in accordance with the terms of each applicable collective agreement.”

Highlights of the new agreement include:

  • yearly wage increases and lump sum payment at ratification
  • funeral pay for all members
  • prescription drug card
  • opportunity for Grid B transfers
  • continuation of hourly rated managers with updated to relief premiums
  • pension contribution increases
  • expansion of Grid B benefits
