Union meets with Sobeys-Safeway on transfers, staffing issues

Government-appointed Arbitrator Vince Ready announced in April that Safeway stores scheduled to close in early May would remain open until July 5 (July 28 closure for City Square Safeway in Vancouver).

Since Ready’s announcement, the union and company have met to further discuss and refine the job placements for union members in the closure stores.

The union has also had ongoing discussions with members who had already made decisions about their futures to ensure members were still able to transition and leave as they had indicated before the announcement to extend the store openings.

The union met with Sobeys May 8th to discuss some outstanding issues, including store staffing issues in the closure stores as well as the non-closure stores. At this meeting, the union and Sobeys agreed to meet again to review the placement list and make the transitions for members to new stores as smooth as possible.

Negotiations for a new contract between UFCW 247 and Sobeys-Safeway remain on hold.

Sobeys-Safeway is engaged with Vince Ready and UFCW 1518 to see if they can move forward in their bargaining process. Negotiations between Sobeys-Safeway and UFCW 1518 are scheduled to take place May 28 and May 30.

News and information for Sobeys-Safeway members will be posted on the UFCW 247 website as it becomes available.
