Shopping At Pricesmart May Not Be All That Smart At All!

We decided to find out just how much money we could save if we shopped at the "new" PriceSmart store that used to be a Save On Store.

So we took a weekly "sale" flyer from Save On Foods and one from PriceSmart for "sale" items offered by both stores during the week March 26, 2006 through to April 1, 2006 and did a comparison.

We put together a grocery cart of the same "sale" products offered by both stores and compared the "sale" prices.

Considering that the Overwaitea Food Group, the company that owns both stores, claims that PriceSmart is the place to shop to get lower prices than those offered at Save On Foods, we were surprised by what we found!

You can check for yourself and you too will find that the "sale" prices from PriceSmart are about the same as the "sale" prices at Save On Food stores!

If you bought our cart full of groceries at PriceSmart instead of Save On Foods you would save a grand total of 69 cents!!

So for saving 69 cents you got to live the experience of bagging your own groceries, loading them in the cart, and packing all those "savings" out to your car!

Is there something wrong with this picture?

But as the PriceSmart "sale" flyer proudly proclaims...

THE PRICES ARE ALMOST THE SAME!
THE PRODUCTS ARE THE SAME!
THE OWNER IS THE SAME!
THE EMPLOYEES ARE THE SAME!

Well, the difference between the two is that when the owner changes the name on the store from Save On Foods to PriceSmart, the wages, conditions and benefits paid by the owner to the workers in the store drop. And of course the owner puts more of the money coming into the store into his pocket without doing much more than buying a new sign and installing some self scan checkout counters. Not a bad deal really!

We think it is fair for customers, who have been loyal to Save On Foods, to expect a little more than
the 'shell game' they are getting! And of course we believe the workers deserve to be treated with more honesty and respect too.

If you don't want to be part of this 'shell game' you can start by telling Save On Foods, PriceSmart, the Overwaitea Food Group, ...they are all the same company...that you expect part of your consumer dollars to go to pay decent wages, benefits and conditions to those who work in stores where you shop.

Then you can stop shopping at PriceSmart...because you are only saving a few pennies anyway...and shop at your nearest Save On Foods store where the workers earn decent wages and benefits.

SO WHAT IS THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN SAVE ON FOODS AND PRICESMART?

The price comparison information contained in this flyer can be found and verified in the sale flyers of Save On Foods and PriceSmart, covering the week of March 26, 2006 -- April 1, 2006. Both of these companies are owned by Overwaitea Food Group, LP.
