Safeway workers across Manitoba voted 83% in favour of their new contract yesterday.

An estimated 1,135 Canada Safeway employees took part in yesterday's vote, having earlier voted overwhelmingly in favour of a strike mandate if a new agreement couldn't be reached before the existing one expired.

"We were probably closer to a strike when we've been in a long time," said UFCW Local 832 president Robert Ziegler. "But 83% shows the members understand that it's a good contract and a fair contract. I would have liked to have seen a shorter contract unit, but in light of the circumstances -- the grocery industry going through a lot of changes, and the economic situation -- I think it's a good contract."
