PRESS RELEASE: FEBRUARY 19, 2018

UFCW 247 has met again with Sobeys about the company’s plans to close 10 Safeway stores, and the impact on union members.

During the conference call with the company, UFCW 247 clarified our position on issues impacting union members’ rights, with specific emphasis on the job protection and store closure language protections in the contract.

At this time, the union and company are not in agreement regarding how the process is supposed to work, and both parties have agreed to talk further. The outstanding issues are largely due to the fact that Sobeys intends to close multiple stores at once, and the complications that flow from this.

The talks taking place between the union and company are focused specifically on Sobey’s store closures, as mandated by the BC Labour Relations Code Section 54. Section 54 states that the parties must meet in good faith for meaningful discussions to develop an adjustment plan for impacted union members.
