Former UFCW 1518 President Rudy Krickan passed away February 7, 2007 in Abbotsford, B.C., at the age of 88.

Rudy was a Canada Safeway employee and union activist who was elected Secretary Treasurer of Local 1518 in 1963. At that time, the Secretary Treasurer was the leadership position in the union. When the union constitution was amended in 1973 to make the President the elected leader of the union, Rudy carried right on and was re-elected as President, a position he held until his retirement in 1981.

In addition to the leadership positions he held with Local 1518, Rudy Krickan served as a Vice President of the International Union, and was a key player in drafting the original constitution for the United Food and Commercial Workers Union in 1979.

Rudy led the membership of Local 1518 through the landmark labour dispute with Safeway and other major grocery retailers in 1969. Rudys leadership was instrumental in the outcome of that lockout, which saw Local 1518 become the first union in Canada with a jointly-trusteed Dental Plan, the introduction of the Pension Plan, and the introduction of Accumulated Paid Time Off (A.T.O.).

Rudy Krickan is survived by his wife Anita and sons Verne, Bob, Dick, and Ron; daughters Judy and Bunny; and 20 grandchildren.

Memorial Services will be held Monday, February 12, 2007 at Hendersons Funeral home at 10:00am. Hendersons is located at 34537 Marshal Road, Abbotsford BC.
