Employee: Wal-Mart Fired Me for Being Pregnant

February 2, 2006

There is outrage tonight at the nation's biggest retailer, Wal-Mart. A woman says Wal-Mart fired her because she was pregnant. Today protesters chanted outside of the Wal-Mart in Hartford, in support of Octavia Goolsby.

Goolsby says she lost her job when her doctor told her to cut back at work due to her pregnancy. Wednesday the National Organization for Woman and the United Auto Workers came to Wal-Mart on Flatbush Avenue to fight for Goolsby, a single mom who is eight months pregnant and out of a job.

Goolsby worked at Wal-Mart for 11 months, training as a pharmacy technician, one month shy of qualifying for the Federal Family Leave Act. She believes they fired her because she had to take two weeks off for a complication with her pregnancy.

"We're living in 2006 and women should not be fired for being pregnant," said protester Maggie Russell. "It's absolutely unconscionable that this happens."

Goolsby says she can not get a new job because Wal-Mart will not release her technician's license.

"I have no job, two kids at home, and another on the way," says Goolsby.

Goolsby tells Eyewitness News she does not want to work at Wal-Mart anymore, she just wants her technicians license released so she can get a new job.
