The union had its first meeting this week with Sobeys since the company announced it was closing 5 Safeway stores, and threatened to close 5 more stores in Metro Vancouver.
The union spelled out its concerns to Sobeys, and discussions took place regarding the legal and contractual rights of UFCW 247 members impacted by Sobeys closure of Safeway stores.
"Sobeys knows we will actively defend and protect the rights of our members in Safeway," says Suzanne Hodge, President of UFCW Local 247.
"We looked at a number of areas of the contract with the company, and we have the union's lawyer reviewing the contract language to make sure we're doing everything we can to protect our members," says Hodge.
The meeting between the union and company was held as mandated by Section 54 of the BC Labour Relations Code, which requires an employer to give at least 60 days notice in advance of a change affecting the terms, working conditions, or security of a significant number of employees to whom a collective agreement (contract) applies.
