Sobeys Proposes Concessions Then Cancels Bargaining in Manitoba

UFCW Local 832 in Manitoba had their first day of bargaining today with Sobeys and were presented with a set of concessionary proposals from the company that would “effectively gut the collective agreement,” according to Jeff Traeger Local 832 President. Sobeys then notified the Local they were cancelling the remainder of the week of bargaining and potentially cancelling more dates.

“It has been over 4 years since Sobeys purchased Safeway and they are still in a shocking state of disarray”, said UFCW 247 President Suzanne Hodge. Sobeys had full knowledge of the collective agreements in place in BC, Alberta and Manitoba prior to buying Safeway and now they are proposing massive concessions at the expense of UFCW members in order to solve their problems and fix their mistakes.

We fully expect that we will be presented with a similar set of concessionary proposals by Sobeys when we enter negotiations.

Local 832 is now preparing to take Sobeys on and Local 247 will certainly be considering our options and supporting their efforts.
