Local 1518 Extra Foods Members Begin Strike, 247 Members Effected

Approximately 100 UFCW 1518 members employed at the Extra Foods store in West Vancouver's Park Royal mall have gone on strike after their employer refused to withdraw demands for rollbacks and concessions during negotiations for a new collective agreement.

A Labour Relations Board mediator assigned to assist with negotiations earlier this week booked out of negotiations on Thursday, and picket lines went up around the store at 8:00AM Friday.

Extra Foods management insisted throughout negotiations that employees take concessions to their existing collective agreement. Union members had responded in December with a 90 percent strike vote.

UFCW Local 247 has members working in the Meat, Deli and Seafood departments at this location.Under the terms of their collective agreement, they are not required to report to work behind a legal picket line of another trade union and 247 members left the store when the picket lines went up. A meeting was held today with those members we will continue to update them as events occur. We would ask that all 247 members support their brothers and sisters from 1518 at this time.
